Vestibular System: How it works, Why it matters and your Path to recovery
Ever wondered how you stay balanced? Thank your Vestibular System!
Our amazing vestibular system allows us to stay upright all the time, even when we are moving. This intricate system is responsible for detecting head positioning and motions, allowing for us to react and maintain our balance. Think of the vestibular system as your body’s internal GPS for movements.
This internal GPS of ours (the vestibular system) has three key components:
1. The Inner Ear Labyrinth: Inside your inner ears are tiny organs, often called the labyrinth due to their complex structure. These organs act like miniature motion sensors, detecting head rotation, forward/back, up/down movements, and even head tilts.
- The Vestibular Nerves: These nerves act as messengers, carrying the motion information from the inner ears to your brain.
- The Brain’s Vestibular Centers: Located in the midbrain and cerebellum (at the back of your brain), these centers process the information from the inner ears. But your brain is smart! It doesn’t just rely on one source. It also integrates information from other senses like vision, muscles, joints, tendons, hearing, touch, and even memory and emotions to create a complete understanding of your balance. This allows your brain to send precise instructions to the muscles in your eyes, trunk, and limbs, helping you react appropriately and stay steady.
Identifying Symptoms and Finding Solutions
But imagine if this intricate internal GPS gets damaged, sending your body the wrong directions and causing a host of disorienting symptoms – that’s when problems with the vestibular system can arise. At times, the consequences can be significant, leading to dizziness, imbalance, and other troubling symptoms.
What is Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)?
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to alleviate symptoms caused by vestibular disorders. These disorders can lead to dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, and even vision problems. VRT focuses on exercises that promote brain compensation for inner ear issues, helping you regain your equilibrium.
Patients often referred for Vestibular Rehabilitation have been diagnosed with one of the following:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Vestibular Neuritis/Labyrinthitis
- Unilateral Vestibular Hypofunction (UVH)
- Vestibular Migraine
- Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
- Mal de Debarquement (MdDS)
- Cervicogenic Dizziness
- Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS)
- Meniere’s Disease
- Neurological conditions (i.e., stroke, traumatic brain injury)
- Vestibular deconditioning (from aging or inactivity)
- And many other vestibular conditions…
Even if you haven’t been diagnosed, you might benefit from VRT if you experience any of these:
- Vertigo (sense of spinning)
- General dizziness or lightheadedness
- Nausea, vomiting, fatigue
- Neck tightness, stiffness, and/or pain
- Imbalance and difficulty walking
- Headaches
- Frequent falls
- Vision issues (double vision, shaky vision with head movement, difficulty focusing, poor tolerance to screens)
- Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, mild memory issues
